Before storm season, schedule routine maintenance and confirm your generator completes its exercise cycle. Test carbon monoxide alarms and keep their backup batteries fresh. Keep the generator area free of debris and maintain the clearances specified in your owner’s manual. Have the correct oil and service supplies for your model ready for an extended outage.
During a storm:

Follow your model’s manual for shutdown, cooling, and checks during extended operation. Never service a running or hot generator.
